Week 18: The Shuttle Era

By the 1980s, rocketry's biggest question shifted from “can we get there” to “can we do this more than once.”

The Space Shuttle was the first partially reusable orbital spacecraft, with its main orbiter vehicle designed to fly dozens of missions rather than being discarded after a single use like every rocket before it.

No new formula this week — the interesting story here is qualitative: reusability changes the entire engineering approach, from disposable, optimized-for-one-flight hardware to durable hardware built to survive repeated cycles of launch, reentry, and refurbishment.

The first Space Shuttle launch, Columbia on mission STS-1, took place on 12 April 1981.
